Kiwi’s Take a Lesson From Olympic Champions

Lochhead SpikesLochhead and Pitman won their first match against Georgia, and then lost to the Olympic Champions, Brazil in the FIVB Beach Volley World Tour event in Barcelona, Spain.

New Zealand Beach Volleyball Team of Kirk Pitman and Jason Lochhead continued their quest for qualification to the 2008 Beijing Olympics in Barcelona, Spain with one win and one loss in the ‘Main Draw’ and now face a Brazilian team in their next elimination match.

Lochhead and Pitman’s first match of the day was their elimination match against the Georgian Team of Geor and Gia. This was the fourth meeting of the two teams, with the Georgian team winning the first 2, and Pitman and Lochhead winning their last meeting in Brazil in 2007. The Georgians have an Olympic ranking of 13, and a guaranteed spot at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

The Kiwis started the match well, dominating from the outset. They strolled through the first set playing errorless beach volleyball to take it 21-15. The second set was even more convincing winning 21-10, and the match 2-0.

The second match was against the reigning Olympic Champions of Ricardo and Emmanuel of Brazil. This was always going to be tough, as the number one seeded team in the World have been at the top of the sport for several years.

It a close first set Lochhead and Pitman scrambled well, and got some good blocks on the large Ricardo. The Brazilians though pulled away at the end of the set to win 21-18. The second set saw the Brazilians continue where they left off in the first set. They comfortable won the 2nd set 21-14, and the match 2-0. Lochhead and Pitman now play the young Brazilian team of Bruno and Maciel to move to 13th position in the tournament.

Win and Loss For NZ Pair

New Zealand women’s beach volleyball team Anna Scarlett and Susan Blundell have been eliminated from the fifth round of the world tour in Barcelona, Spain.

Scarlett and Blundell opened by beating Poland 21-18 18-21 15-13 but were knocked out by Brazilians Maria Clara and Carol 21-19 18-21 12-15.

Lochhead & Pitman Unlucky in Croatia – And Finish 13th

Lochhead-PitmanThe New Zealand Beach Volleyball Team of Kirk Pitman and Jason Lochhead continued their quest for qualification to the 2008 Beijing Olympics in Zagreb, Croatia.

Lochhead and Pitman’s first match of the day was their elimination match against the Norwegian team of Maaseide and Horrem.

In a very close match, Pitman and Lochhead survived the cool conditions to play some consistent Beach Volleyball and hold on to win a thrilling first set 24-22. The second set was more decisive as the Kiwis grew in confidence against their more experienced counterparts. They completed the second set 21-18, and the match 2-0. This result moved them through to 13th position and an opportunity to play for 9th spot.

The next match was against the second of three Norwegian teams in he main draw. Norway has a great history of beach volleyballers, with qualification and quarter final results in the Olympics and 2 World Championship victories.

The first set was a close affair with both teams sharing the lead at different stages of the set. Lochhead and Pitman could not quite break the deadlock, and ended in succumbing 19-21 in he first set. The second set was a torrid affair with both teams making spectacular plays in difficult conditions under intense pressure. The teams went point for point from 21 all, with both teams having opportunities to win with serves for match point. The break came at 31-30, with the Norwegians securing match point, to make the set 32-20, and the match 2-0.

Lochhead and Pitman finished a satisfying 13th, which will count towards their Olympic qualification points.

Lochhead & Pitman Staying Positive

Pitman & LochheadJason and Kirk started their main draw berth positively with a win over Croatia in 35 minutes in 2 sets. Lochhead-Pitman (NZL) vs Peric-Nojic (CRO) 2-0 (21-13, 21-15).

 

They then faced the American team of Gibb and Rosenthal and despite a close game lost in 2 sets in 41 minutes. Lochhead-Pitman (NZL) vs Gibb-Rosenthal (USA) 0-2 (21-18, 22-20)

 

Main Draw is double elimination so they still have another life and will face a team seeded 2 spots below them Maaseide-Horrem of Norway.

Pitman, Lochhead Carry on Quest to Reach Beijing

New Zealand’s Kirk Pitman and Jason Lochhead moved into the main draw of an Olympic Games qualifying beach volleyball tournament in Croatia with two wins.

Lochhead and Pitman had too much experience and skill for a young Canadian side, winning 2-0 ( 21-14, 21-18 ) in 35 minutes.

In a second qualifying game for the main draw of the Beijing qualifying tournament, they beat Venezuela 21-9 21-13 to move into the main draw.

Pitman & Lochhead Win NZL Open

Jason Lochhead DivingThere was a little slice of history at Stanley Street on Sunday as the New Zealand number-one Beach Volleyball combination became the first team to win back-to-back NZ Opens.

The Kiwi duo of Kirk Pitman and Jason Lochhead outlasted the American pair of Paul Baxter and Adam Roberts 22-20 22-20 in just over 45 minutes.

It was a tight, tense struggle but the New Zealanders lifted noticeably on the big points against the rookie American pairing.
